How to Make Donors Feel the Love
It’s all about the power of “you.”
If you work in fundraising or nonprofit communications, you’ve heard it a lot: “Your communications must be donor-centered!”
To thank donors and inspire them to keep giving, you’ve got to write your newsletters, annual reports and other communications in a way that puts the focus on the donor. So, how do you that?
A Few Quick Steps to Focus Your Message on Your Donors:
Stop bragging about what your nonprofit accomplished.
Talk instead about how the donors’ support helped the organization accomplish its mission.
Tell the donors that they, not you, are going to change the world.
Liberally sprinkle your writing with “you” and “your” instead of “we” and “our.”
As fundraising expert Ken Burnett says, “Fundraisers should make liberal use of ‘you,’ the most powerful word in fundraising.”
